I run an after-school class for local teens at the Fabville maker space at Somerville high school. I teach small groups of students maker space skills and how to design and build your their telescopes. Students learn computer-aided design, 3D printing, CNC routing, laser cutting, astronomical observing, and more. The club is free, and no prior experience is necessary. At the end of the class, students keep their telescopes. Each after-school session will consist of 30-45 minutes of learning computer-aided design, fabrication, and/or astronomy, followed by guided, optional build time. Below are some pictures of completed telescopes from the 2024/2025 school year.
I was co-director of MIT's sidewalk astronomy club, astrogazers, in graduate school. We would bring telescopes out to the public and invite people to look up at the night sky. I also organized events with museums, libraries, and yearly science festivals.
